Julia Luo is a London-based performer whose work spans Chinese instrumental music and Western brass. She studied euphonium at Xinghai Conservatory of Music, began learning guzheng in childhood and later developed her sheng practice in the Guangdong Hanyue tradition.
Her work moves between concert stages, orchestras, recording sessions and projects that bring musicians from different traditions together.

Fourth London International Chinese Music Festival (LICMF)
Across three festival concerts, Julia performed on sheng with the UK Chinese Orchestra and appeared in the showcase programme on guzheng. The week brought traditional repertoire into conversation with newly written music.
UK Chinese Music — UK Chinese Orchestra
Julia joined the UK Chinese Orchestra for a London celebration marking the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the Mid-Autumn season.
The Blossom and the Mountain — Recording Project
A recording project organised through Nick Newton’s network brought Chinese and Western instrumental voices into the same musical space at Stone Nest.
Southampton University Symphonic Wind Orchestra (SUSWO)
As principal euphonium, Julia performed through successive SUSWO concert seasons, from symphonic wind repertoire to film music and new concert programmes.
European concert tours
Julia toured with Southampton University Symphonic Wind Orchestra as principal euphonium, taking the ensemble’s concert work beyond the UK.
Southampton University Brass Band (SUBB)
Julia played principal euphonium with Southampton University Brass Band, performing in seasonal and themed concerts around the city.
Southampton Concert Wind Band (SCWB)
With Southampton Concert Wind Band, Julia performed in public concerts and took part in repertoire that ranged from established wind works to a new concerto.
Southampton Youth Wind Band (SYWB)
Julia worked with the euphonium section and joined the band’s concert and summer activities as an instrumental specialist.
Gongyu Chinese Instrumental Orchestra (宫羽国乐团)
At Sendelta International Academy, Julia founded and directed a Chinese instrumental ensemble, building its membership, instrumentation and rehearsal practice.
Xinghai Conservatory of Music Symphony Wind Orchestra
Julia’s formal training in euphonium was grounded in ensemble performance with Xinghai Conservatory of Music Symphony Wind Orchestra, alongside her degree in music performance.
